Accutek offers metallographic inspection services at the macro and micro level.

Metallography Specimen
on 1000x Microscope
Accutek’s metallographic evaluation services include microstructure and macroscopic evaluations. Microstructure Evaluations and Macroscopic Evaluations provide useful information to designers, fabricators and manufacturers who use metals in their engineered products. Our metallurgical lab is equipped with the tools for sample preparation, sectioning, mounting, polishing and etching.
Our lab’s accreditations, including A2LA, Nadcap, GE, and Pratt & Whitney prove us to be an experienced and reliable source for your organization’s metallurgical testing needs.
Microstructure Evaluations
Accutek’s microstructure evaluations provide a high-magnification inspection of the grains in materials using microscopes, as well as other specialized equipment. Our testing facility regularly performs microstructure and grain evaluations with our metallographic microscope capable of evaluating specimens from 50X - 1500X and utilizing our color digital microphotography.

Cross-section of
Fractured Steel Screw Thread
A metal’s grain structure contains valuable information, including:
- Evidence of the processing history (e.g. mechanical forming, thermal treatment, surface treatment)
- Service history (e.g. stress, wear, heat, corrosion)
- Material properties Defects and impurities (e.g. porosity, cracks, inclusions, contamination).
Additional microstructure evaluation services include metallographic replication services available for non-destructive grain evaluation and SEM services to provide higher magnification analysis.
Macroscopic Evaluations
Accutek’s metallurgical laboratory also performs low-magnification inspection of parts or materials using stereomicroscopes, digital macrophotography and image analysis software.
A macroscopic evaluation shows evidence of processing history (e.g. mechanical forming, thermal treatment, surface treatment), service history (e.g. stress, wear, heat, corrosion), defects and impurities (e.g. porosity, cracks, wear, contamination). Our lab is outfitted with a stereoscope for evaluating specimens from 6.5X - 50X with an articulating boom stand, adjustable light sources, fiber optic point and ring illumination equipment.
