Wear Testing

Custom and standard test equipment for your wear simulation project.

Wear Testing

Accutek Testing Laboratory offers a variety of wear testing options to simulate the wear that occurs over time when two or more interactive materials and/or components are in relative motion. Accutek’s wear testing experience and capabilities range from medical implants to composite materials to porous coatings.  Wear testing provides critical information concerning the wear rates of materials, mass loss analyses, and particulate generation.

The recurring contact of articulating surfaces generates particulate throughout the functional life of the component, and wear testing is often required to determine the quantity, volume, and morphology of generated particulate.

Our wear test machines supply:

  • highly accurate, long-term wear fatigue and durability simulations
  • precise, replicable administration of loads and motions
  • continuous compliance with evolving ASTM and ISO standards

Medical Implant Wear Testing
For the next generation of motion preserving implants, regulatory bodies require medical device designers to perform wear testing before these devices can go to market. Accutek provides wear testing of large joint replacements (e.g. hip and knee prostheses), motion preserving spinal implants, and small joints including shoulder and wrist.

For spinal implant wear testing, Accutek’s utilizes an in-house 6 station MTS Bionix® Spine Wear Simulator. Our Intervertebral Disc dynamic wear testing service offers 6 degrees of freedom and satisfies both ASTM F2423 and ISO 18192 standard testing methods, to ensure reporting and results our clients can depend on.

For hip and knee implant wear testing, Accutek has designed proprietary wear testing machines. Our in-house simulators were developed and built based upon our decades of testing experience and manufacturing our own test machines. Our hip and knee wear testing services satisfy ISO 14242 for hip wear and ISO 14243 for knee wear testing. In addition, Accutek has partnerships with worldwide leading researchers and laboratories in the field to accommodate all your wear testing requirements.

Accutek also routinely performs wear testing in parallel with other standard medical device testing, such as ASTM F1717 for spinal fixation, ASTM F2077 for intervertebral spacers and cages, ASTM F2624 for interspinous devices, as well as many other devices.

Pin On Disk Testing
Accutek’s Pin on Disc Testing provides solutions which allow for direct comparison of wear rates and coefficients of friction between the tested materials.  Examples of performed testing include:

  • Identifying superior materials for the medical industry
  • Comparison of wear properties of predicate devices
  • Qualification of new, cost-effective materials

Accutek’s pin on disc testing machine consists of a moving “pin” under an applied load in contact with a stationary component.

Custom Configurations
Accutek also has the capabilities to develop custom wear testing machines for your organizations specific wear testing needs.
